overhand knot: basic knot, useful as a stopper knot. Hard to untie.
bowline: good for making a loop, or as an anchor point around a bar. Used in climbing to secure rope to a harness.
double figure of eight: good for making a loop and more secure than a bowline. Also used in climbing to secure rope to a harness.
reef knot: for tying two ropes of same diameter. Not very secure. Used in first aid for bandages.
clovehitch: self tightening and easy to undo. Both ends of the rope can then be used.
round turn and two half hitches: useful for tying the second end of a rope and putting the rope under tension.
fisherman's knot: good for tying two ropes of the same diameter together.
double sheet bend: used for tying two ropes of different diameters together.
daisy chain: used for shortening a rope. will uncoil very easily by pulling on the free end.
monkey's fist: good for creating a weight at the end of a rope, and then throwing it. A stone can be placed in the middle of the knot to make it heavier. Also used for decorative purposes, and as a weapon.
